Our Mission
The mission of Gethsemane United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Christ for the transformation of the world.
Our Vision
Gethsemane United Methodist Church is a community of faith that makes a difference in…
…spiritual lives: helping people know Christ and experience God’s presence
…relationships: giving people a place to belong and grow in faith
…the city and world: calling people to serve beyond themselves
Our Values
Faith: The first and paramount responsibility of a disciple is to be with Jesus. We seek and celebrate God’s presence in both extraordinary and ordinary moments of life. It is Christ alive within us that empowers all that we do.
Friendship: We understand that we are made to live together deeply in community. We therefore pursue authentic relationships with one another, and welcome people into our midst by offering them our friendship. We believe that God calls us to friendships across the barriers that divide our city and world.
Transformation: We believe God wants to transform our character. We actively seek to grow, not content to remain where we are on our spiritual journeys, but to strive for holiness. We practice the spiritual disciplines of Bible study, worship, sacraments, prayer, and service as means of grace by which God grows us. We take a special interest in helping children and youth grow to live as committed followers of Jesus Christ.
Tradition: We affirm the truths of the historic Christian faith, and see ourselves as a part of an endless conversation between God and his people. We remember what God has done in our midst, and celebrate the cloud of witnesses that have lived among us.
Servanthood: We were created to “pour ourselves out” into the lives of those among us and around us. We view the work we do both in our church and in our community, as an offering to God. We are generous with all segments of our lives: our prayers, presence, gifts and service.
City: We believe God is building the City of God right in our midst. We therefore work with God to bring renewal to our city spiritually and socially.
Excellence: We aim at excellence in all that we do. We are called to offer our very best to God. We are a positive people, rejoicing in all circumstances, seeking beauty, and celebrating the goodness of God’s creation. |
