Gethsemane United Methodist Church is a church committed to following God’s will and “practicing resurrection.” So what does that mean? Let’s start with following: God’s will. In Matthew 26, Jesus goes to the Garden of Gethsemane at a time when the weight of the journey to the cross is heavy, and he prays, “Not my will, but your will be done” (Matt. 26:39). It is our hope and prayer that everyone at Gethsemane would be about the kind of following of God’s will that Jesus expressed in his prayer. Lord, not our wills or agendas be done, but may your will be done in the life of our church, our community, and our world.
We are committed to what I like to call “practicing resurrection.” After the experience in the Garden, Jesus journeyed towards the cross and was crucified; but, the good news is the story did not end there. Jesus was resurrected! The Apostle Paul calls Jesus the “first fruits” of the resurrection! But the glorious new life that we have in Christ begins now. The redemptive - transformative - restorative work that we do in the world today is participating in the work of Christ and these are glimmers of resurrection. It is truly amazing - grace-filled - that we are able to participate with Christ in this work.
Gethsemane is located at the heart of the most multi-cultural area within Houston - the world is literally at our doorstep. We are committed to serving our community. We believe strongly that the gospel - the good news of Christ is both spoken and demonstrated in the way we live - the way we serve.
We are a church that seeks to reflect our community and the Kingdom of God in all of its colorful and rich diversity. We are a community of young and old. A community of seekers. A community of those who know a lot about Christianity and those who know little. No matter what your skin color or your nationality...no matter if you can run or you are bound to a wheelchair...everyone is welcome here at Gethsemane!
Here at Gethsemane We are about changing the world - one heart at a time. |
